José Ureña, President of the Federacion de Surf de Costa Rica (FSC), announced today that the fifth date of the Circuito Nacional de Surf DAYSTAR 2008-2009 presented by Coca-Cola Zero (CNS) will take place this weekend, March 7 and 8, in Playa Carmen in Santa Teresa.
Called Torneo Day & Night Playa, the 5-star tournament will begin Saturday and Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m. in front of the facilities of Club de Playa Day & Night at Playa Carmen, with winners in all categories receiving 2,000 points.
On the second to last date of the CNS, and with considerable advantage in the rankings due a winning season, Jaco’s Jason Torres will roll into Playa Carmen this weekend as the man to beat for Costa Rica’s nacional surfing title. Torres will have that confirming honor during the 6-star, 2,500-points Gran Final Terrazas Reef Playa in Playa Hermosa in May.
The FSC believes that Torres has brought a certainty, concentration, and, has been, without a doubt, an applied innovator with the most radical moves. This has seen him crowned the winner or 2nd place trophy recipient all year. The Circuito has not seen such raw talent in a leader since the 2005-2006 season when Tamarindo’s Isaac Vega dominated the waves, podiums and rankings, eventually securing a title that year.
Even when his friend, Jairo Pérez (Jaco) won the 5-star Copa Natural Balance in Nosara, leaving Torres at 2nd, Jason still manages to lead the overall rankings with more than 2,600 points. Ultimately, the national champion earns his title by tallying the four best dates of greatest scores, discarding the two worst.
Thus, the FSC will formulate an alternative ranking (non-general) where they will add the three best dates of each surfer, leaving room for the fourth best one to be the Gran Final Terrazas Reef Playa.
As to the Torneo Day & Night Playa this weekend in Playa Carmen, www.wetsand.com reports that the waves for the contest will be between 2 and 4 feet with sets of 11 and 12 seconds of duration. High Tide is expected to be at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday and 7:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Jaco’s Luis Vindas, Costa Rica’s aerial specialist, was the winner here in Playa Carmen during last year’s pass of the Circuito. Last month, Vindas already obtained a 3rd place in Nosara, and he certainly knows how to play the spoiler: In 2008, when he won here on the Circuito, he put pressure on then-rankings leader Gilbert Brown of Puerto Viejo. So, he is set to do the same thing to Torres, since he already is familiar with the role.
Inscriptions for the Copa Balance Natural will take place Friday, March 6 at the facilities of Day & Night in Playa Carmen, between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. with a value of 10,000 colones for the categories older than 16 years of age and 6,000 colones for those less than 16.
It’s important to note that the Torneo Day & Night Playa is realised in Playa Carmen thanks to the support of Coffee Artemiz, Pizzería Tomato and Hotel and Commercial Center Playa Carmen.
