Sticking to familiar tricks proved to be the recipe for success for winners of the inaugural Grand Rapids Downtown Winter Rail Jam skiing and snowboarding competition.
Competitors said the steepness of the 30-foot ramp allowed little opportunity to try anything too flashy or daring.
"It was pretty much do something that I knew I could do on the box, so I could land and have enough control to hit one of the rails," said Ashley Vander Meer, of Grand Rapids, winner of the female snowboarding contest. "It was a tight transition."
Vander Meer was one of more than 150 athletes competing in the event, hosted by The B.O.B.
Rob Michel, 18, of Petoskey, took top honors in the men's advanced snowboarding category, along with a $1,000 prize from the Grand Rapids Downtown Alliance.
Other prizes included ski and snowboard gear and a trip to a resort in Utah.
"I kind of stuck with my basic runs," Michel said. "It was really quick, really steep. You kind of had to be on point to get anything done."
Brandon Coy, a 20-year-old Mattawan resident, took first place in the intermediate division.
The top adult ski finisher was Elliott Karafa. Tyler Humphries won the pee wee snowboard competition and Erik Lukkari took top pee wee ski honors.
