Club is chosen to host prestigious BMX event

BMX riders have been given a boost this week with the news that Andover BMX Club has been selected to host a prestigious regional event in October.

The South Region BMX Championships will take place on 4 October after work to improve the Andover track has finished.

The club received funding from Test Valley Borough Council towards track improvements and also secured a lottery grant to assist with redevelopment work.

Chris Mingo, chairman of Andover BMX Club, said: “Andover BMX Club is going from strength to strength and the news that we have been selected to hold the South Region BMX Championships is the icing on the cake.

“The committee worked hard to secure lottery funding and we are grateful for the contribution that Test Valley Borough Council has made to help bring the track up to standard.”

Cllr Caroline Nokes, portfolio holder for leisure and culture, said “The borough council’s involvement in funding this project clearly demonstrates our commitment to supporting and investing in our local facilities in order to encourage participation in a range of sports and activities.

“Having a venue that is capable of hosting regional and even national events will be great for the local community and we expect, as BMX racing is now included in the Olympics, enthusiasm for the sport will grow in the run-up to the London 2012 Olympics.”
