EPS/epoxy surfboards gain momentum in Santa Cruz

Fifty years, and we're still using the same old recipe to make surfboards. That tried-and-true combination of polyurethane foam and polyester resin.

As Surfing Magazine editor Evan Slater writes in this month's annual Surfboards Issue, "...after the demise of Clark [Foam] and our two-year bender on alternative materials, we've finally sobered up and gone back to our old, faithful polyurethane Thruster like nothing ever happened." Well, Santa Cruz didn't get the memo.

Here in Surf City North, surfboard design and construction have always evolved ahead of the curve. Unlike most regions in our afraid-of-change surfing world, creativity is part of the surfing heritage in Santa Cruz.

New ideas tend to be given a fair trial instead of being immediately burned at the stake for heresy.

Need some examples? UV resin, Future fins and Surftech all took off here before gaining acceptance abroad, not to mention other minor surfing innovations like the wetsuit and the leash.

Today, Santa Cruz, more than anywhere else in California -- or the rest of the surfing world for that matter -- is EPS/epoxy country.

On an average day at Steamer Lane, you are likely to find the best surfers in the lineup riding high-performance shortboards constructed of Expanded Polystyrene foam and glassed with fiberglass and epoxy resin.

M10 and Stretch, two of the biggest surfboard manufacturers in town, whose labels are recognized throughout the surfing world, are currently producing almost exclusively EPS/epoxy boards.
